A few weeks ago, a French consumer magazine published a special edition dedicated to “foodstuffs that are poisoning us”, which are omnipresent in processed foods. Between sugar, fat, additives and even pesticides, there are around 10 products you should avoid if at all possible. So what are they?

Ketchup contains over twenty grams of sugar per 100 grams of sauce. This is the equivalent of three sugar cubes! Dried packet noodles for their part are chock full of additives such as flavourings, glutamate and other flavour enhancers. They contain only 1% plant produce!

Cured meats are also to be banned, as they contain nitrates and nitrate compounds. Equally, they are very high in fat (45 g of fat per 100 g). Fruit yoghurts are also ‘enhanced’ with numerous additives such as colourants, thickeners, acidity regulators, etc.

Stock cubes are full of salt and additives, including flavour enhancers such as monosodium glutamate or disodium guanylate. Barely half a stock cube counts for 20% of the maximum daily intake of salt recommended by the WHO. They also contain huge quantities of sugar, just like powdered cocoa (sometimes up to 90%), which is also not recommended.

Processed vegetarian meals are also best avoided, as they are stuffed with additives, fats and sugar, among other ingredients. Fizzy drinks as well as sugar free (or gluten free) foods are not recommended for the same reasons, along with breakfast cereals.
