Sexual consent: Condom packaging requires four hands to be opened

An Argentinian brand of condoms has created a new packaging of condoms that needs four hands to open the box.  This design concept aims to highlight the importance of sexual consent.

Over the last few months the #MeToo movement and other reports of sexual aggression have reiterated the importance of sexual consent.  The Argentinian company Tulipàn, specialise in sex toys but there are now also offering a condom packaging that requires the consent of the two parties.  It is a simple concept as the packaging design requires four hands to open the box.  This means that the two parties need to be involved.

Joaquin Campus from the advertising agency BBDO who help to launch this product stated that “For this campaign, we understood that we had to talk about the most important thing in every sexual relationship: pleasure is only possible in the case of mutual consent“. He continued by saying that “If it’s not a yes, it’s a no”.

Seductive design

The condom is trapped in packaging that opens only if two people simultaneously support different pressure points located on the sides of the packaging. For now, these condoms are distributed free in bars in Buenos Aires, and seem to have been met with great success. The company could soon market them throughout the country this year, or early next year.

It is believed that in today’s society 1 out 5 women and 1 out of 75 men suffer sexual aggression at some point in their life.  What is more, more than half of female sufferers have been sexually abused by their own partner.  Of course, simply asking two partners to open a condom box won’t prevent sexual violations but asking for the the two parties to consent to opening the packaging is at least a good starting point.  If this concept works, other companies may follow suit.

Precautionary reminders

Remember that there are some precautions when using these products. A few months ago Terpan laboratory, made a point of reiterating the precautions of use so as to avoid the possible transmission of HIV.  Firstly, it is important to choose the right condom size. If it is too wide, it could come off. While, a condom that is too tight could have more risk of tearing.

Also remember to check the expiry date of the condom, or the presence of the logos NF (French standard) or CE (European standard), to ensure the quality of the product. It is also very important to take precautions when opening the box so as to avoid any risk of tearing. Finally, remember that a condom that is too dry will be more likely to tear. This is why you might need to use a lubricant.
